FARGFABRIKEN - Center For Contemporary Art and Architecture
Färgfabriken is an attempt to create a venue that can serve as a vehicle for exhibition as well as dialogue, for research as well as message. It is a place that creates encounters, exchanges and relationships between different attitudes and value systems. It is simply a place in constant transformation. Färgfabriken started in 1995 and 1996 with a series of large projects involving many artists. The idea was to examine contemporary art as a tool in global politics – and at the same time examining the role of the cultural institution, the curator and the role of the artist. Since then – and very many projects and exhibitions later – there has been many changes, but the idea behind the activities remain intact. Färgfabriken is based on creating encounters: between different categories in society, between different art forms, between whatever is interesting to confront with something else. To create encounters is also to create networks. Färgfabriken is based on creating public relevance, and therefore committed to posing questions rather than providing answers, to creating “open” projects that attract a broader public interest, and to making public opinion a part of the projects. Many of Färgfabriken’s projects are based on processes. An exhibition might have years of preparatory work behind it – and a project does not end when the exhibition is over. Instead it evolves into discussions, publications, new projects. Färgfabriken produces a large number of exhibitions and projects in-house every year. The exhibitions sometimes turn into seminars, books or web projects. Färgfabriken has gradually evolved into a structure that now not only covers the INSIDE activities (exhibitions, publications, seminars etc), but also houses three different branches for activities OUTSIDE of Färgfabriken’s own venue. Färgfabriken is based on a growing network. It collaborates with an ever-growing number of people, companies and institutions, not only within but also outside of Sweden. Many of Färgfabriken’s partners are from disciplines outside of what is traditionally regarded as the art world.

Residents utilize the Center's spaces to develop unusual new projects, explore fresh directions and forge stimulating collaborations with other artists. Zacheta National Gallery of Art
The Zachęta National Gallery of Art - the oldest exhibition hall in Warsaw - has a tradition reaching back to the mid-19th century. Although its building was one of the few to survive in Warsaw’s city center after the destruction of the Second World War, Zachęta as an institution changed immensely. Its rich collections of art have been placed in deposit at the National Museum in Warsaw, where they now constitute the heart of the Gallery of Polish Art. The space vacated at Zachęta was occupied by a newly created Central Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions. After the political transformations of 1989, Zachęta became the Zachęta State Gallery of Art, returning to the noble civic goals of the original Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts. Once again, it is dedicated to the enrichment of the nation’s social and cultural life, seeking to develop art at home and to promote it abroad.
