Marissa Newell
For a long time I painted (acrylics mostly) but my practice seemed to fade during a long stint spent refining my skills in computer-based graphic design. Everything creative in me just seemed to get swallowed up by the computer. Despite what some people might think about graphic design, my experience has been, for the most part, one of a gradual erosion of my natural creativity. I guess it’s just the way it goes when you’re stuck within the (often conservative) confines of corporate worldview. But over the past couple of years I’ve been drawing again – a lot of pen and watercolour pencils – whenever I can, often in semi-explosive bursts . . . you know, a month or two of lots of drawings, followed by a rest. They’re fragments and snatches of thought, stuff to keep my head working okay, and to remind me that I’m not a robot/replicant or living in some dreadful corporate-dominated void. So you’ll see anything and everything . . . dogs, birds, mutants, critters, the soi (laneway) where I live in Chiang Mai, my partner (the poet) Paul Hardacre as all sorts of characters or items, places we’ve traveled to in Asia . . . different squiggles and scribbles and sometimes words or bits of text from around the place – I was incorporating a lot of words at one stage. I try not to get too caught up theorising about what I do or why. It just happens, and that’s enough for me right now. I’m enjoying what I do.

The House of Payne
Born and raised in Chicago Marty Garcia's paintings have mainly dealt with relationships between people; the boundaries they create and sometimes transgress. The lack of familiarity between him and the sitter often engenders freedom to experience and express. these portraits are done in. pastel and on 9X11 Bristol board. Portraiture was chosen because of its accessibility across class. Portraiture often becomes exclusionary seeing as many people cannot afford it; this project allows the sitter to become emotionally but not financially invested. Not charging allows for a higher emotional investment. In other words, Marty believes, assigning a monetary value to a work of art diminishes the work’s psychological and social value. The project seems to be less about the paintings themselves, than it is about the social and emotional landscape that brought them into being. Process superceding product in this case, and questions the very notion of ownership, often engendering a deep understanding of what it means to have, and to have not. This project’s content is rooted in social interactions. Sitters partake in this project as a whole, focusing not only on the piece but also on the time we spend together. As they are at home, they are more likely to be comfortable and relaxed, able to open up a bit of their lives, helping with this visual interview, to get the best possible rendering of the individual.

Tom Thackrey Photography
Tom Thackrey is a San Jose, California photographer who is exploring the figure by painting it with light. He poses his subjects in a dark studio, opens the shutter on the camera and paints the light onto his models with penlights and laser pointers. The results are unusual and often surprising. The motion of the photographer and the model, intentional or otherwise make each shot unique. The model’s skin can look like molten metal or be barely outlined. The direction and shape of the light source is mysterious, raising more questions than giving answers. The shape of the figure and the shape of the light interact to produce shapes uncommon to either. www.creative-light.com
